Week 13: A Challenge You’ve Overcome
Have you ever felt lost and had no idea how to keep moving forward? Maybe it was a relationship you thought would last forever only to have it end the next day, or a business you were sure would be a success but went under within a year. Life hands us challenges like this almost everyday. Even though we may hurt because of them, it’s how you choose to overcome your challenge that is important.
A few years ago I lost my mother to a long battle with cancer, and I was devastated. I had told myself that I would be just fine. Even when she was on her deathbed, I still didn’t feel that profound sense of loss yet. But when she took her final breath and was gone, it hit me like a train. All the grief and every sad moment from across the last couple of months all came at once. Suddenly, I wasn’t so strong anymore. This was a battle I was not sure I would ever overcome.
I ate my feelings and buried myself in books to just make it through. But with the support of my family and friends, it got better. Over time, just making it through the day got a little easier. I will always miss my mother, but it no longer weighs me down.
The harsh reality is that some point, we will all go through struggles in life. How we choose to respond to it makes all the difference. If you are in the midst of a challenge, here are some things you can do to lessen the burden on yourself:
- Focus on the positive
- Label your emotion
- Choose new stories
- Write down your feelings
- Exercise, even if it’s just a walk around your neighborhood
- Step into another person’s shoes
- Get something done
No matter where you are during this trial, you can overcome it and you will become stronger because of it. Don’t let challenges get you down, and be grateful for the lessons they teach you.
