It’s Week 15 of the 52 Weeks of Gratitude Challenge, here’s our challenge for this week:
Week 15: Things you Like About Spring
This post couldn’t have come at a more perfect time! As I’m sitting down this morning to write this post, the windows are open because it’s already 60 degrees, the birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and there is as nice cool breeze coming from outside. Spring is one of my favorite seasons because it’s a fresh start. It’s a midway point between winter and summer where we have a chance to transition and hit the reset button.
Spring also means spring cleaning! Although many of you are probably less excited about this one, I love spring cleaning. In general, I find cleaning tasks to be enjoyable in small doses. However, spring cleaning is a perfect time to clean out our homes and clean areas of our home that are usually forgotten about. This year, I’m more excited for spring cleaning than ever, because I’ve been slowly going room by room and decluttering each one mercilessly.
Rooms that were once filled wall to wall have been cleared out and now have a more peaceful and open feel to them. This also makes cleaning them a breeze! These rooms will now stay tidy longer and can be picked up in about two minutes (five if they’re really bad) and spring cleaning them is just as easy. Since all the rooms I’ve been through are more open and have less stuff, I can easily get to problem areas without digging through our clutter to get there. With my cleaning supplies ready to go, spring cleaning will be a breeze this year.
Spring also means Easter is on it’s way! In our home, Easter is traditionally spent hunting for Easter eggs and baking an elaborate egg shaped cake to enjoy on Easter. This year we put together a joint basket of Easter goodies to share rather than buying a bunch of stuff for each other. We picked up a dozen eggs from Target for only $0.50 this week, and we’re using our egg dye kit and supplies we bought on clearance last year to dye Easter eggs this weekend.
Another household tradition has been the Egg Cake. Growing up, my mom used to create these amazing cakes for birthday parties using different cake molds. At some point, she ended up with an Easter egg cake mold, which she would use to make a cake decorated just like an Easter egg every year. As my
sister and I got older, we started to take on the tradition of decorating this elaborate cake ourselves. The tradition still lives on in our household, and this weekend you can be sure I’ll be baking up another Easter egg themed cake!
In case there weren’t enough reasons to love Spring, I also love the warmer weather. I’ve never been a cold weather person, and even when it snows I spend as little time as possible outdoors. I love the warmer weather and the chance to open the windows after a long and cold winter.
While our late winters and early springs can mean putting on your winter jacket one week and shorts the next, I still look forward to the promise of higher temperatures and the chance to finally put those jeans away till fall!
My parents’, Midnight’s, and both of my future in-laws’ birthdays are in Spring. I truly love other people’s birthdays, and always have as long as I can remember. I look forward to watching them blow out the candles on their birthday cakes, and spend a lot of time pondering the perfect gift to give them. As a kid, birthdays were always a big deal in our household. There were elaborate birthday parties, and sometimes even multiple birthday cakes! Birthdays were one of the few times we got to get together with some of our extended family to celebrate. Perhaps the reason I love birthdays so much is the fond memories I have of celebrating them growing up, or maybe I’m just that crazy person who looks forward to celebrating other people’s birthdays each year.
Spring is a Fresh Start
Perhaps one of my favorite parts of spring is a fresh start. If you’ve been behind on your New Year’s Resolutions, or have been wanting to make your home Spring ready, now is your chance! Spring is like the halfway point of the year, and it’s the perfect chance to start over and make some new habits. At this point many of us have fallen off course on our goals or our homes may look a little bent out of shape from lack of cleaning, but you can still turn this year around! Be grateful for the chance to spring clean your life as well as your home this spring, and don’t forget that you don’t need to wait till New Year’s to start over!
