Last year it dawned on me that it had been a long time since Mr. Penny Pincher and I had a true and honest date night. This was something I was determined to change and even made it a part of my goals and resolutions for the year. Prior to setting this goal, date nights kind of slipped by the wayside. We went out to dinner so often that we could hardly count that as a date night, and we pretty much stopped planning date nights at all.

7 Cheap Stay at Home Date Night Ideas
Do Your Own At Home Wine and Cheese Tasting
Grab a few bottles of wine you’ve never tried before, along with a few blocks of cheese, and do a wine and cheese pairing right from your own home! You can invite some friends over, get dressed up, and make an event out of it! If you aren’t familiar with wine and cheese pairings, check out these graphics to help you out.
Host a Game Night
Game nights are a great way to enjoy date night at home. Pour yourself a glass of wine, get some snacks, and play some of the games from your childhood. If you don’t own many board games, don’t let that stop you from having a game night. You can play pictionary or heads up using an app on your phone. If you want to get creative, make your own game! We played Spouse Scattergories for one of our date nights, and it was a lot of fun!
Take Dance Lessons right from your Living Room
If you have dreamed of taking dance lessons with your spouse, you can learn how to Salsa, Tango, or Ballroom Dance right from your living room! YouTube has tutorials for any type of dance you could possibly think of. Get all dressed up and make a night of it by spending quality time with your partner and learn a new skill.
Have a Picnic in your Backyard
If you have a backyard or patio, take a blanket and a picnic basket and have dinner (or even just dessert) under the stars. Make a dessert from scratch together and enjoy it while watching the stars, or make their favorite meal and surprise them with a romantic dinner! Take some candles from around the house to set the mood, just be careful when handling an open flame.
Watch Old Home Movies
Grab some popcorn and curl up on the couch while you watch your wedding video or other home movies from the past. Nothing rekindles romance quicker than watching yourself fall in love all over again. If you don’t have any of your home movies, watch movies from when you were a kid, or from back when you were dating. Mr. Penny Pincher and I spent our first date night watching Tangled in theaters, so that movie holds a special place in my heart.
Build a Fort
As hard as it is to believe, in my 23 years on this earth, not once had I ever built a blanket fort. Somehow the opportunity never presented itself I guess. When I told Mr. Penny Pincher about this, he said tonight was going to be my lucky night as we were going to build a fort together. We took chairs, pillows, sheets, and our bedroom comforter and made the best fort I had ever seen! We put the pillows from our bed and a few blankets underneath, and watched YouTube videos and played with Midnight from our fort.
Play the Newlywed Game
One of our favorite things to do on road trips is ask each other questions. Sometimes I’ll search the internet far and wide and print out a bunch of questions for our trips, or sometimes it’s just a simple game of would you rather. Either way asking and answering questions with your spouse can be a lot of fun! If you are looking to play the Newlywed Game with your spouse, here are some questions to get you started.
Date nights don’t have to cost any money, and you don’t even have to leave your house to have a good time together. Whether you’re having a movie night at home or enjoying dinner under the stars, the important thing to remember is that date night is all about enjoying each other’s company. Don’t spend so much time planning your date night that you can’t even enjoy it when the moment arrives.
