Our garbage disposal stopped working last week, which meant after a few days we had fruit flies. If you eat a lot of fruits, then you are probably familiar with these pesky bugs. Even when you throw the food away, the flies STILL stick around!
Fortunately, there is an easy (and cheap) way to get rid of them. This homemade trap is designed to lure the fruit flies in and keep them from escaping.
To make your DIY fruit fly trap, you’ll need just a few things. As a bonus, you probably already have them around your home!
- A small bowl
- Plastic wrap
- Vinegar (apple cider vinegar works best in my experience)
- A rubber band (if you don’t have any, a large hair tie works great too)
- A toothpick
First, pour a small amount of vinegar into your bowl. The vinegar will put off an irresistible aroma to the flies, making it difficult for them to resist.
Next, cover your container with plastic wrap. Secure the plastic wrap stretched tight over the bowl with a rubber band.
Then, using a toothpick, poke a few small holes into the top of your plastic. The holes should be just large enough for the fruit flies to pass through, but not large enough for them to easily escape.
Finally, place your trap in the area where you see the most fruit flies. You might need to make multiple traps depending on how bad your fruit fly infestation is. When you stop seeing fruit flies, empty the trap into your garbage can.
Fruit flies can be a terrible pain in your kitchen, but these traps will get your infestation under control quickly! Whenever I start to see fruit flies around the apartment, we quickly put out one of these homemade traps.
