Between running two home based businesses, keeping our home tidy, running errands, and cooking meals, it’s hard to remember to take time for myself. We all need to practice a little bit of self care to ensure we don’t burn out, but you can still treat yourself without spending a lot, or even spending anything! Here are 10 frugal things you can do to treat yourself.
10 Frugal Ways to Treat Yourself
Take a hot bath
My favorite way to take time for myself is by taking a bath. There is something deeply relaxing about a good bath that just makes all the worries melt away! I like to add bubbles to my bath using Bath and Body Works Luxury Bubble Bath. I usually stock up during their Semi Annual Sales event or when I have Amazon gift cards. If I don’t want a bubble bath, I enjoy using bath bombs or bath salts during my soak. They leave my skin feeling refreshed and soft, but beware, as the bath bombs can sometimes stain the tub. Bath products can be expensive, so it’s best to stock up when you find a good deal.
Read a book
Sometimes I’ll even read while I’m in the tub! This is a perfect way to relax after a stressful or long day. I’m usually reading a nonfiction and a fiction book at the same time, and choose whichever one I’m in the mood for. You can easily get books for free from your local library or borrow them from friends and family. I wrote a whole post on getting books for free or cheap that you can read here for more places to get discounted books.
Take a nap
Are you having a stressful, or just an overall bad day? Nothing will make you feel better than a nap! If you’re the type of person who can nap for four or more hours, consider setting an alarm to make sure you don’t oversleep. Even just a 20 minute nap can make you feel refreshed and ready to go. Plus, a nap is free!
Watch your favorite show
In an effort to cut our cable bill, we have a Netflix subscription and this digital antenna for our TV. While we do watch many shows together, Mr. Penny Pincher isn’t exactly a Grey’s Anatomy fan. When he’s busy or I want to relax without dealing with life’s responsibilities, I’ll turn on whatever show I’m watching (currently it’s The Vampire Diaries.) Watching some TV is still a nice treat, and it won’t cost you anything extra!
Make a delicious cup of coffee
I love starting my morning with a cup of joe. I feel like my cup of coffee is the official start to my day! When you’re feeling run down, a good cup of coffee can turn everything around. Buy yourself some nice K Cups to use if you have a Keurig, or tea (if you’re not a coffee drinker) and save it for times when you want to treat yourself! If you use K Cups, you can read all about how to save money on them here.
Get your makeup done
I love getting my hair, nails, or makeup done. There is something so pampering about letting someone else do my makeup! Salons are expensive and can cost you $50 or more per trip! Sometimes makeup counters in department stores or makeup stores will do your makeup for free! This is a great way to still get pampered without the cost.
I know you’re probably laughing at this one, but think about the last time you truly did nothing. You probably can’t remember can you? This is such a rare occurrence that it really is a treat! Make a pact with yourself to do nothing for an hour or even just 10 minutes. Sitting alone with your thoughts and without any distractions can feel amazing.
Go for a walk
This one might not be a treat for everyone, but I love going for walks. I’m naturally a slow walker so I love taking walks on my own where I can go at my own pace. I get the added benefit of enjoying the warm breeze, without the pressure to put in a workout!
Get a special treat at the store
It’s always a happy accident when I realize I’m under budget for groceries one week, and I can bet it happens to you sometimes as well. Going out to dinner or even going out for ice cream will cost you almost double of what it would be to make it yourself. If you’re wanting a bowl of Cold Stone ice cream, picking up a whole carton from the store will still cost less than your little cup. As long as you don’t let these get out of hand, this can be a great way to treat yourself for less.
Give yourself a DIY pedicure
Instead of dishing out $20-$50 for a salon to do your nails, do your own for free! A pedicure is a great way to treat yourself and it makes your nails look cute! If you want a salon quality pedicure for less, check out my post on how to do a salon pedicure here!
