Are you thinking about taking a trip for Memorial Day? This year the BF and I are going to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA for our weekend getaway. We’ve been getting great deals on everything from park tickets to a free hotel room.
Where I work we only get 6 days off a year for holidays, so whenever I get a holiday off you can bet that I’m planning a trip somewhere during that day. I’m going to share with you some of the things we did to save money on our upcoming trip.
How to Saved $500 On our Vacation
We listened to a timeshare presentation for a free room.
Back in November, we were invited to listen to a timeshare presentation. The deal was that if you came and sat through the presentation you would receive a $200 visa gift card, two 4 day 3 night stays at any of their resort locations, and one 3-day 2-night stay to return to Williamsburg. The $200 gift card would more than cover our meals for the day and gas to go to the presentation, so we figured it was worth the investment of our time.
After saying no at least 200 times to their persistent offers, we ended up not having to worry about paying for a place to stay for 3 vacations! The only catch was having to choose your dates ahead of time, specific days of the week for your stay, and using all three within a year. I calculated our savings based on the price of a hotel room in Williamsburg for Memorial Day weekend.
We started a vacation fund early.
We planned all of our vacations and family visits in December for the upcoming year. I know this might be too far ahead for some people, but we were able to save so much money on all our trips this way! By knowing in December when we would be traveling, we saved hundreds on flights and accommodations. For our trip to Busch Gardens, we were able to put less than $100 away each month and still have enough money for our trip by Memorial Day weekend. Since we had been putting money away for the trip for four months prior to our trip, when we found a good deal on something we already had the money to pay for it. This meant we didn’t have to dip into our savings and pay it back later.
Savings: around $72
We found discounted tickets on Groupon.
Tickets for Busch Gardens are $77 each on their website for a single day admission ticket. By looking on Groupon, we were able to find single day admission ticket passes for $38.50 a person! We ended up getting two tickets for the price of one by going through Groupon instead of the Busch Gardens website.
We have already created a food budget for our trip and plan to bring our own food for breakfast every day while we are there. Planning a vacation doesn’t have to be expensive, and we’ve found a way to make our vacations affordable and end up saving money in the process.
