Summer is hands down my favorite time of year. The heat doesn’t bother me at all, but I’m sure most of you are probably feeling a tad bit miserable in the scorching sun. Don’t let high temperatures get you down! While it might feel amazing to have your air conditioner constantly blowing to keep you cool, it will quickly drain your wallet. Here are some frugal ways to beat the heat this summer!
How To Stay Cool In The Summer
Fire up the grill
Ovens and stovetops will heat up your house quickly, making your home unbearable. Instead, take your dinner outdoors and cook on the grill! You can make anything from pizza, burgers, even kabobs. Cooking outside will keep all of the heat outside, and won’t cause your air conditioner to work overtime just to get rid of the cooking heat.
Our apartment complex has a grill right at the pool! This makes for a fun afternoon of swimming, followed by a tasty veggie burger.
Homemade popsicles are MUCH healthier than store-bought ones and they’re cheap to make! Cool treats such as popsicles are perfect for hot summer days. You can usually find popsicle molds for around a $1 at CVS or the Dollar Store that will work just fine.
To make your own popsicles, cut up your fruit of choice and place them in the mold. You can add as many or as little as you like, but don’t overfill the container. Then, add your liquid to fill in the gaps. Personally, I’d use coconut water or lemonade for your popsicles. It adds a nice fruity flavor to them. After you’ve finished filling all of your molds, place them in the freezer for about 6-8 hours. Check out this list of 26 two ingredient popsicle recipes for more ideas.
Head to the pool
Spending the afternoon at the pool is a great way to stay cool. If you don’t have a pool in your backyard, go to a community pool, or a friend’s pool. Wherever you go, don’t forget your sunscreen!
If you have room in your backyard, you can always buy an inflatable pool. We used to do this when I was growing up. It was a fun way to go to the pool without leaving your house or paying for an expensive membership.
Wash your car
Is your car looking a little dirty? Give it a wash! Washing your car is a great way to beat the heat because you get to cross off something on your to-do list, and the water will help you cool off.
Sometimes summer means more sweating. You need to be replacing the moisture you lose when you sweat. Replacing fluids will help keep you cool. You should avoid beverages that contain alcohol, caffeine, or a lot of sugar as those could cause you to be dehydrated. Opt for hydrating foods such as watermelon or cucumber to help keep you from becoming dehydrated.
Have a water balloon/water gun fight
Stay cool and have fun outside by having a water balloon or water gun fight. Balloons are insanely cheap! You can get 144 here for $10. You can also find them at dollar and drug stores. Get the whole family involved and have a parents versus kids war.
