There’s one place in my house that I DREAD cleaning (but not nearly as much as the bathroom) and that’s the refrigerator. I toss out any expired food or drinks that I might have been missed at the end of every month, but with our new fridge, this is an even more difficult task. There are less drawers and shelves in this fridge, so it’s easy for food to get lost.
Don’t waste those leftover meals and food! Throwing out food is wasting your money. Here are some steps and recipes to use up your leftovers and clean out your fridge.
Step 1: Take inventory
You won’t be able to use up your food if you don’t know what’s in there. Start by writing down EVERY single thing in your fridge that you need to use up before it expires. Making a list will help you figure out what meals to create without having to take everything out of your fridge.
Step 2: Start with the crisper drawer
Aim to use up everything from your crisper drawers and any dairy products you have first. These will probably be the first things to go bad. Use up all those odds and ends, and be sure to check every nook and cranny. If it’s gone bad, throw it away. If it’s still usable it’s time to use it.
Step 3: Plan your meals around what you have
Personally, I’m great at planning meals. All I need is my list of ingredients and I can whip up meals for weeks! If you need help planning your meals check out BigOven’s leftover recipe creator to help you out. It’s easy to use and has helped me out when I’m out of ideas.
